What is art?

When I was in college I was obsessed with the question "What is art?"  Not really a very novel question.  Any artist or art appreciator has thought it at some point. Last night I watched "Exit Through the Gift Shop".  I enjoyed the movie because it was about art, specifically street art, and it rekindled my old question "What is art?"
Banksy in Los Angeles
I first discovered the street artist Banksy when clicking around through Guns, Babes, and Lemonade.  I was really taken by his unique style of graffiti.  His images are clever, definitely irreverent, and they make you think.  "Exit Through the Gift Shop" is produced by Banksy.  Just like his street art it makes you think. The main character, Thierry Guetta a.k.a. Mr. Brainwash, is presented as a real person.  The movie stays true to this idea to the end, but as the viewer you really can't tell whether or not you are being duped by Banksy or if you are watching a real documentary.

This film is definitely worth watching.  I recommend seeing it with someone else so that you can discuss it afterwards.  You will be questioning art, the art world, and you may even want to make a run at being an artist yourself (just kidding).  If you have seen this I would love to hear you thoughts.
